Public Health Wales statement on Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

Dr Chris Williams, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said:

“We wish everyone a Happy New Year, and hope that 2021 will be a better year for us all. With vaccinations for COVID-19 progressing, we welcome the announcement by the Welsh Government of the roll-out of the second Coronavirus vaccine (from Oxford/AstraZeneca) in Wales.

“Vaccinating the adult population of Wales, to protect people from severe disease, is a significant task, and the vaccine will take time to reach everyone.

“Please do not to phone your GP, pharmacy or hospital asking when you will get a vaccine.  When someone is in one of the groups eligible for the vaccine, they will be invited to attend a dedicated clinic which will have been set up to ensure patient safety and that of the healthcare professionals.

“The effects of the vaccines may not be seen nationally for some time, and with Wales at alert level four we must continue to follow the advice on keeping Wales safe.  Stay at home, meet only the people you live with, maintain social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and work from home if you can.

“As indicated by the Welsh Government, the new restrictions were brought forward due to the identification of a new more transmissible variant of Coronavirus.  Public Health Wales has been working with UK partners to investigate and respond to this variant.

“It is normal for viruses to undergo mutations, and we expect this to happen.  Although the variant is easier to transmit, there is currently no evidence that it is more severe.

“We are reminding people that all current guidance relating to Coronavirus continues to apply to the new variant, including advice relating to symptoms, social distancing, self-isolation, and vaccination.

“The new variant shows up as positive in Public Health Wales’ existing Coronavirus tests, and people must continue to seek a test in the usual way if they develop Coronavirus symptoms.

“If you or a member of your household develop a cough, fever or change in sense of taste or smell, you must self-isolate immediately and book a free Coronavirus test, either by calling 119 or by clicking here.

“If you are due to travel out of the UK, please be aware of the changing situation and keep an eye on the FCO website for up to date details.

“Due Bank Holiday arrangements, the data released today is as at 31 December at 9am. Data released tomorrow will cover a 48 hour period  from 9am on 31 December to 9am on 2 January instead of the usual 24 hour period and so should be interpreted with caution, as it is likely to be around double the usual 24 hour value.

“This will not affect individuals receiving their results, and anyone who tests positive will be contacted by their local authority’s Test, Trace, Protect team in the usual way.

“The Public Health Wales public-facing data dashboard is a rapid reporting tool which is subject to correction and reconciliation. Official statistics are provided by the Office of National Statistics.

“Public Health Wales urges everyone to follow the rules, to avoid transmission of Coronavirus and to protect everyone in our communities, including the most vulnerable.”

“Rydyn ni’n dymuno Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i bawb, ac yn gobeithio y bydd 2021 yn flwyddyn well i ni i gyd. Gyda brechiadau ar gyfer COVID-19 yn mynd rhagddynt, rydym yn croesawu cyhoeddiad Llywodraeth Cymru am gyflwyno'r ail frechlyn Coronavirus (o Rydychen / AstraZeneca) yng Nghymru.

“Mae brechu poblogaeth oedolion Cymru, er mwyn amddiffyn pobl rhag afiechyd difrifol, yn dasg sylweddol, a bydd y brechlyn yn cymryd amser i gyrraedd pawb.

“Peidiwch â ffonio eich meddyg teulu, eich fferyllfa na'ch ysbyty yn gofyn pryd y cewch frechlyn.  Pan fydd rhywun yn un o’r grwpiau sy'n gymwys i gael y brechlyn, byddant yn cael gwahoddiad i ddod i glinig pwrpasol a fydd wedi’i sefydlu i sicrhau diogelwch cleifion a’r gweithwyr gofal iechyd proffesiynol.

“Efallai na fydd effeithiau'r brechlynnau'n cael eu gweld yn genedlaethol am beth amser, a gyda Chymru ar lefel rhybudd pedwar rhaid i ni barhau i ddilyn y cyngor ar gadw Cymru'n ddiogel.  Arhoswch gartref, cwrdd â'r bobl rydych chi'n byw gyda nhw yn unig, cadwch bellter cymdeithasol, golchwch eich dwylo'n rheolaidd, a gweithio gartref os gallwch.

“Fel y nodwyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru, cafodd y cyfyngiadau newydd eu symud ymlaen yn sgil nodi amrywiolyn mwy trosglwyddadwy o'r Coronafeirws.  Mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru wedi bod yn gweithio gyda phartneriaid yn y DU i ymchwilio i'r amrywiolyn hwn ac ymateb iddo.

“Mae'n arferol i feirysau fod yn destun mwtaniad, ac rydym yn disgwyl i hyn ddigwydd.  Er bod yr amrywiolyn yn haws i'w drosglwyddo, nid oes tystiolaeth ar hyn o bryd ei fod yn fwy difrifol.

“Rydym yn atgoffa pobl bod yr holl ganllawiau presennol sy'n ymwneud â'r Coronafeirws yn parhau i fod yn berthnasol i'r amrywiolyn newydd, gan gynnwys cyngor sy'n ymwneud â symptomau, cadw pellter cymdeithasol, hunanynysu, a brechu.

“Mae'r amrywiolyn newydd yn ymddangos yn bositif ym mhrofion presennol Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru, a rhaid i bobl barhau i geisio prawf yn y ffordd arferol os byddant yn datblygu symptomau Coronafeirws.

“Os byddwch chi neu aelod o'ch cartref yn datblygu peswch, twymyn neu newid o ran blasu neu arogli, rhaid i chi hunanynysu ar unwaith a threfnu prawf Coronafeirws am ddim, naill ai drwy ffonio 119 neu drwy glicio yma.

“Os ydych i fod i deithio allan o'r DU, byddwch yn ymwybodol o'r sefyllfa sy'n newid a chadwch lygad ar wefan FCO i gael y manylion diweddaraf.

“Oherwydd trefniadau Gŵyl y Banc, mae’r data a ryddhawyd heddiw hyd at 31 Rhagfyr am 9am. Bydd data a ryddheir yfory yn cwmpasu cyfnod o 48 awr rhwng 9am ar 31 Rhagfyr a 9am ar 2 Ionawr yn lle'r cyfnod arferol o 24 awr ac felly dylid ei ddehongli'n ofalus, gan ei fod yn debygol o fod tua dwbl y gwerth 24 awr arferol.

“Ni fydd hyn yn effeithio ar unigolion sy'n cael eu canlyniadau, a bydd tîm Profi, Olrhain, Diogelu'r awdurdodau lleol yn cysylltu ag unrhyw un sy'n profi'n bositif yn y ffordd arferol.
